2019-2020 Book List

When the committee met at the beginning of February, we discussed the concern raised by many schools, students and parents. The committee would like to announce that we have decided to shorten the list from 27 books to 22. It is our hope that the new list will seem less daunting and more inviting to middle school students as they enter into this new stage in their life. We are aware that middle school brings more opportunities for extra curricular activities and an increased workload for students. We want ALL students to feel like Battle of the Books is still an enjoyable and attainable activity for them.

Our reasoning behind this decision is multi-faceted:

  1. The structure of the Middle school Battle of the Books competition is such that a large number of questions is needed for the competition to exist. The middle school competition consists of 3 levels for which the committee is responsible for writing questions. This is in contrast to the elementary and high school level which currently have only 2 levels of competition.

  2. In order to have a large number of questions available and maintain the high standard of quality questions, there need to be more books on the middle school list. This eliminates the possibility of question repetition during a competition, especially at the local level where there are many more participating schools that require more questions and more rounds.

  3. Most importantly, we take pride in providing quality literature that meets the needs of our diverse population. To meet these needs, the middle school list covers various genres, ethnicities, cultures, interests, and reading levels. In order to accomplish this, we need a larger number of titles. We feel that we can best do this with a list that has 22 books.
